Paul Winter receives Lifetime Achievement Award from
Mortgage Finance Gazette

Paul Winter MBE, chief executive of Ipswich Building Society, was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards. The award recognised Paul for his distinguished contribution to the mortgage and finance industry over the past 35 years.

Paul, who is retiring at the end of this year, joined Ipswich Building Society in 1982 and worked his way up from an assistant general manager to the Board. He was appointed chief executive in 2007 and has led the Society to growth through periods of significant change and uncertainty in the sector.
The reward recognised Paul’s notable attributes, including helping the Society to become the first lender to successfully champion Mortgage Misfits – coining the term that is now industry recognised, providing a lending lifeline to those people who otherwise would remain overlooked by high-street banks, including the self-employed and older people.

Under his leadership, the Society has established numerous responsible business initiatives to support the local community, including the launch of a health and wellbeing programme in 2009. Paul has also made a valuable contribution to creating new opportunities for young people, an area which led to him being awarded an MBE for Services to Young People. A vocal supporter of the need to boost the nation’s housing supply as a means of tackling homelessness and the right for people to have a roof over their heads, Paul has been an advocate of shared ownership for the last two decades, and worked closely with industry partners on the UK’s first ever self-build shared ownership project.

Paul commented: “It’s a great honour to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award. I am pleased to have been recognised for my work at Ipswich Building Society and I cannot go without acknowledging those I have had the privilege to work with over all these years. The Society’s success has truly been a team effort and is the reason for all of our achievements.”

The award was presented on 16th November at the 2017 Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards ceremony at Vinopolis near London Bridge.
